  1. Jayapura, Jubi – Wajah Emma Ronsumbre berseri-seri pada hari Minggu (5/6/2022). Dia diantar kepada keluarga laki-laki memakai baju adat perempuan Biak. Kepalanya berhias bulu burung Cenderawasih.

Both upacara and acara are loan words from Sanskrit, and they have a very similar meaning. Acara has the wider semantic range of the two words, covering schedule; agenda; topic; program; event, but also ceremony and festivity as in acara pernikahan (wedding ceremony). Here, acara is synonymous with upacara which is limited to ‘ceremony’ or ‘ritual’.

While upacara and acara indicate something that occurs on a regular basis or is predictable or normative, a peristiwa also includes unpredictable events. It can often best be translated in neutral terms as ‘happening’, ‘event’ or ‘occurrence’ but it does also include unplanned events, and can then be translated as ‘incidence’. The Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia defines peristiwa as kejadian luar biasa or kejadian yang menarik perhatian.

Infixes in Indonesian

Affixation is the process of adding affixed to word bases in order to modify its meaning. We distinguish between four types of affixes: prefixes, suffixes, circumfixes, and infixes. You are already familiar with prefixes like per-, suffixes like -nya, and also with circumfixes like meN-….-kan etc. Many Austronesian languages also have infixes. One infix that occurs in our reading is the infix -em- in turun-temurun. Infixes are always inserted after the first consonant:

  • guruh thunder ➢ gemuruh tumultuous; thunderous; booming

Infixes are not very productive – that is they are rarely used to produce new words.

The infixes are -em-, -el-, -er-, and -in-. The meaning or function of the infix is unpredictable. In most cases, infixed forms have the same meaning as the simple form or a meaning related to it:

  • gigi tooth ➢ gerigi serration; serrated
    suling flute ➢ seruling flute
getar tremble; vibrate ➢ gemetar tremble; vibrate
tunjuk to point ➢ telunjuk index finger
tapak palm, sole ➢ telapak sole, palm
kerja work ➢ kinerja performance; work ability; achievement
