Good starter course
The Indonesian way is a good starter course. The lessons are complete (words, grammatical rules, culture (as reflected in a language) they are thematic (introduction, eating et cetera) and they have a strong push at exploring things yourselves.
I knew the lessons for more than 10 years, but they improved a lot. Some exercises do not work completely (questionmarks do not offer the words to use/translate or answers to choose de not copy). A point to be improved by your software engineers.
I’m really satisfied with the course
Second module completed, I’m really satisfied with the course so far. Highly recommend it!
One of the few reliable, structured resources to learn Indonesian
I found this platform when looking for resources when I decided to take up Indonesian from scratch. The course is really well structured and tailored for these people (like me) who did not know a single word in Indonesian.
I can only recommend it!
I love the course
I love the course and especially the detailed explanations and exercises. Looking forward to the next module.

Approval and Suggestions
I think that your course is well designed, with many exercises to help me as a learner to remember words. In particular, the ‘find the hidden words’ and crosswords are useful exercises. As for the flashcards, I think they would make new vocabulary easier to learn if they contained short phrases rather than single words. For example for colours have ‘yellow banana’ ‘green field’ or for actions ‘drink tea’ ‘eat fish’ ‘cook lunch’ ‘sweep the floor’ etc.
Unfortunately, as a learner online at home, I am unable to do the role-play exercises. For speaking, I speak to Google translate, to see if it can understand my spoken Indonesian and render it in English.
I have found that sometimes exercises are not displayed properly, where I am using Firefox on a Windows PC. I have reported some of these errors.
May I make a suggestion for improving the course? I think it would be helpful to include early on in the course many phrases and short sentences that beginners are likely to need, for example
Sorry, I don’t understand.
Please repeat that.
Please speak more slowly.
How do you spell this word? (needs the alphabet)
Please write it down.
What is the Indonesian for the English word …
Excellent On-Line System
I am really enjoying this course and taking my time to complete all the exercises, I think this is the key to learning the language.
Fantastic way to learn Indonesian.
Fantastic way to learn Indonesian. I learned more in two weeks with this program than with other programs over the years.
Effective, Efficient, and Impressive
An hour or so a day for a few months can get you to a working level of Indonesian to survive in the country – I am both impressed and grateful for the help!
Review first module
As a child of Indonesian parents, I had already some knowledge about Indonesian. I currently have at least an A2 CEFR level.
I’ve chosen to start the course at the beginning to make sure my foundations were correct. My vocabulary knowledge is already very good, but this module has taught me the more precise meaning of words and also has taught me how to use the Indonesian grammar in a proper way.
Furthermore, I like the teaching method of repetition, exercises, theory and practical assignments.
The e-learning module is also very good that I can study at my own pace and is very convenient.
So far I am very
So far I am very impressed by this course. I hope that the rest of the course will be just as well designed as M1.
The Indonesian Way useful repetition
Before I studied I learned already some essentials of Bahasa Indonesia; therefore appeared not too difficult.
Nevertheless was for me a very useful repetition.
However when I could enter somewhere further in the course, could be useful.

This is a fantastic course.
Effective
Practical and simple way to start communicating in bahasa Indonesia effectively.
Review
I have been studying Indonesian for some time using different apps and courses. I wish I had found this course at the start. This is the only online course with a structure to go from A1 to B1. I really enjoy the different types of exercises.
Excellent Service!
The Indonesian Way has been very helpful in completing my first semester of Indonesian study at university. Terima kasih, The Indonesian Way!
Absolutely loving this course, I
Absolutely loving this course, I can use it on my own whenever it fits my schedule. I’m currently in Indonesia testing my knowledge in real life after completing the first 4 modules and thanks to that, I’m able to communicate a bit with my girlfriend’s family.
Very useful course
I have enjoyed following “The Indonesian Way” online course. It has given me the tools to quickly attain a basic understanding of the language before moving to Indonesia. It is very clear and well structured with practical and well designed content. Terima kasih!
Interesting, useful, highly recommended
I really enjoyed this excellent course (Anak Jalanan). I found it useful for my listening ability in BI, and I found that the subject matter was so captivating that it was not a chore at all to study, but something I looked forward to. Indonesian-online is a goldmine in terms of high quality curated audio content.
Some latihans have mistakes
As long as I completed all lessons in module 2, some incorrect answers were found. It may be good to check hidden words latihan to avoid misunderstanding and getting confused.
Brings my Indonesian to the next level
I am taking this course after completing The Indonesian Way. The Baca Yuk series focuses on reading and listening. Baca Yuk is a fun and educational series of lessons that elevate my Indonesian to a higher level! The topics are diverse and interesting, allowing you to learn about Indonesian society and culture. The only thing I’d like is occasional additional explanations for different conjugations and such, but otherwise, it’s perfect.
In the picture, I bring the lesson about Lake Toba into practice 🙂
Amazing, In-Depth, Helpful
I seriously love this module. To be able to work on studying on my own time, on my own, or with my Indonesian friends, it has helped me greatly understand the material in depth. I understand why things are the way they are, and how to not look too foolish when speaking Indonesian. I now know not to say “Kenapa kamu tangis dari mata-matamu?” Because their spy is definitely not crying hahaha. It really is helpful, and I downloaded Anki (Despite not previously liking the software) just so I can learn more Indonesian. : )
Module 2
This was once again a very good module.
Love this course
The Indonesian Way was a perfect introduction to Bahasa Indonesia for me. Fun lessons and relevant topics that you can immediately apply in Indonesian conversations. I will definitely do the next lessons as well.
Far superior to any other online courses
I have purchased all Indonesian Online courses and could not recommend them more highly! I practice at home several times per week, and while I have progressed to the second level, I still repeat the 113 lessons of The Indonesia Way for revision and to remind myself of grammar, slang, and other nuances that I may have forgotten. I have tried several other online programmes, but Indonesian Online is far superior to any other. When I travel to Indonesia, my friends are most impressed that I can have lengthy conversations with them (as long as they don’t speak too fast). Also, if you ever need help or have a question, Uli responds very promptly. Terima kasih banyak, Uli!
Perfect way to learn Bahasa Indonesia
So far I really like The Indonesian Way. You learn words and phrases that you also hear in everyday life and the lessons have just the right size.
Excellent Course!
I have used Serba Serbi Nusantara along with the other courses in the advanced package to review, refresh and strengthen my abilities in Indonesian after having lived outside of Indonesia for fifteen years. This course, in particular, added a ton to my vocabulary and helped me with reading and listening skills. The use of genuine materials makes this one of the best ways to grow in language learning and also deepen cultural understanding. My only suggestion is that the creators go back and check on a few of the lessons in this and their other courses for small errors. Here and there we find questions in one lesson that refer to another or other little glitches. Still, the advanced package with several courses is a great value for the money and the best self-study material I’ve ever seen.
Love Indonesian Way
I love the lessons and the way they are constructed with fun quizzes while being still very educational.
Fun to do
I think it is a good program. It is fun to do. I review the words from Modules 1-8 in Anki almost everyday. Now I have started to add sentences into Anki–like those in Rangkai Kata and the sentences using comparison words like lebih, kurang, sama, etc., in this last lesson. The hardest part of learning Indonesian for me is word order, so I think this will help me. It is easier to review with my iPhone than to go back through the lessons.
Excellent Course! I Iearned a lot
I am using this course to brush up on and expand my language skills after 15 years away from Indonesia. I’m finding it very helpful, and fun to use. It’s great practice/review of grammar, reading and listening, and it’s expanding my vocabulary. The lesson material is taken from authentic texts and youtube videos, and keeps my interest. I love that I’m not just growing my language skills, but learning about the culture in different parts of Indonesia, and how the culture has been changing since I left, as well as fun facts about fruit and birds native to the country.
I am taking this as part of the intermediate-advanced package and have enjoyed and learned a lot from all the courses I’ve used. The package is well worth the cost- highly recommend!
Very Good Method
This is most possibly the best Indonesian online learning method out there. Baca Yuk is very challenging, maybe a bit of a stretch for my level (I’m probably B1, after having taken the online assessment test from the website) as I have to spend few weeks on each unit, but it’s very satisfying.
We also get to have some cultural insight on diverse cultures that are present in Indonesia. I am learning about Biak tribes right now. Very interesting! Will recommend to anyone serious about learning Indonesian!
enjoyed the module
Fun and educational module. A note: in the part of Indonesia where I live (North Sumatra) people use the word ‘kakak’ for ‘older sister’. An older brother is called ‘abang’. And of course especially the abbreviations ‘kak’ and ‘bang’
good material, shaky technology
This is an excellent course, with lessons building on each other, just the right amount of new vocabulary and very interesting cultural and linguistic notes.
My only complaint is the uncertainty of the technology. Sometimes even though I am logged in, I am not able to access the lessons, while the sound files do not play all the time. I suspect the compatibility might be related to browsers on a Mac, because ever since I have switched to using my office PC, things have become better.
Very engaging Lessons
I found the beginning lessons to be very engaging with different games used to learn vocabulary and especially the different materials to help with all the learning aspects; writing, reading, speaking and listening. Under the old methods that I used it was primarily reading and answering questions. Being able to listen to native speakers and understand sentences as well as actually providing the opportunity to speak and get feedback is important.
Couple of the hidden word puzzles don’t match up with the words and the computer glitch does not allow for some selections but overall lessons still easy to follow along. New vocabulary coming at steady pace. Surprised very little grammar up to this point.
Great course and great support
Great course to improve your Bahasa Indonesia. Very contemporary learning material. Friendly and very accesible support when you have troubles with logging in et cetera.
Great to use
Fun times had in Module 1. Great for revision etc….
Logical, Practical, and probably the best way to learn Bahasa Indonesia
The most important thing that makes this course exceptional is how LOGICALLY and EFFECTIVELY it is designed. Seriously, I’ve taken many other language courses but this is the best so far. It is so effective, simple, the Anki-cards are amazing, and you will seriously see yourself improve very quickly. No regrets, so far best thing I’ve purchased!
Amazing Resource
Keeps me at the top of my game throughout my Bachelor’s degree. Amazing resource for vocabulary acquisition and sentence structure practice.
Perfectly organized and complete course !
The Indonesian Way is an extremely well-organized and well-thought course. Having previously tried several book & recording, class and in-person tutoring programs, this Indonesian Online course is, in my opinion, the best available. The curriculum is perfectly spaced, with new grammar points presented in an intuitive fashion. With integrated flashcards, Anki-supported flashcard decks, and integrated audio, it’s hard to imagine a better online presentation for self-study. I only wish I’d known about this course several years ago. Now, on to “Baca Yuk!”
Thank you for all of
Thank you for all of you. That’s what I can say until now… The book changed me
Thank you from the bottom
Thank you from the bottom of my heart
Excellent Course
I have enjoyed the course so far and have found it challenging and enjoyable. The online course is very well laid out in a structured way that moves smoothly between the lessons. The variety of methods including flash cards, crossword puzzles, finding the word and unscrambling sentences makes the process of repeating the words over and over, easier to remember them. The instructors are dedicated and passionate.
GOOD COURSE
Very good course
I like this course.
I like this course. I don’t thing there is a better one available.
Best Bahasa Indonesia learning program
I’m a beginner and this is the best Bahasa Indonesia learning program I have found. I travel to Indonesia regularly and since there are no Bahasa Indonesia teachers or classes near me I have tried a number of language programs. This is by far the best for so many different reasons. Vocabulary, grammar, various word, sentence & comprehension exercises, outside material references, real person language tutors, quizzes. And all is organized and presented well so I can build on prior lessons.
Learning for Seniors
Studying Bahasa Indonesian through The Indonesian Way is rewarding and very beneficial for my brain activity in senior years.
TIW lesson structure is way ahead of their contemporary language providers. No comparison.
Apart from my own enthusiasm with everything Indo, TIW lessons reveal not only language, but cultural understanding which is paramount in this emerging country; very much Australia’s most important neighbour.
TIW Team continues to encourage and support my efforts in Bahasa Indonesian – “A day without learning is a day lost”.

Well done !
Indonesian Online is a fantastic resource for learning Bahasa Indonesia. I’ve tried other methods (one-on-one tutoring, Teach Yourself, Pimsleur, and others) over the last few years, but I believe this site is simply the best combination of well-structured lessons and audio/visual materials.
There have been one or two small hiccups, typical of any interactive website, but support has been quickly provided, and all resolved.
I am currently speeding through “The Indonesian Way” foundation course as a review. The explanations, sound clips, and videos are bite-sized and perfectly appropriate to the lesson plans. I’ve looked ahead to the intermediate and advanced lessons, and I am eager to get to them.
I’m very satisfied with this
I’m very satisfied with this course. It’s relatively hard to find good, in-depth materials for Indonesian, and I tried several other apps and programs which all ended very early on after a brief introduction to the language. I’m happy to have found something that can take me to a high level in the language and is so well-designed.
Pros
I have taken a lot of online courses to learn Indonesian and this is by far the best with the reason being it gives you real life scenarios and how people actually speak to one another in their day to day activities.
Can’t stress how important that is.
This book is superb and unique!
Some years ago, I did study Bahasa Indonesia with a couple of hard copy text books from reputable sources, and had a 1x/week in-person tutor. I did learn some of it, and could speak a little when I visited. But six months ago, I found an online tutor who recommended this book, but did not buy it for the 1st month. The price is very reasonable, and has made a HUGE difference in my ability to study and review. It allows exponential progress! I still work with the tutor 2x/week, and also have review study sessions with another of her students 1x/week. That student had worked with her for over a year, and had not purchased the book. I told her that it is a remarkable tool. She now agrees! For those sessions, we just go to the same lesson in the online book, and use our phones as we discuss and complete the lessons.
If you want to learn Bahasa Indonesia, The Indonesian Way is an essential best tool. The interactive exercises and cultural explanations are remarkable…way more than I had expected.
Terima kasih!
Fun and interactive
I thought the 15 lessons for Module 1 were fun to go through. The anki flashcards make it interesting to learn new vocabulary. Having access of The Indonesian Way textbook through the website is a lot more funner to learn the language than going through a regular textbook or eBook. One way to improve the website though is by including videos of recorded lectures that go through the material of the textbook for students to stream. Also, even though the flashcards are useful, there should be a quiz to memorise 15 to 20 new words at once using a Quizlet type testing feature. Overall I really enjoy logging into TIW website on my laptop, tablet or school computer to study the Indonesian language consistently in my own spare time. Many thanks!
Great self-learning
Studying just once a week and with some longer breaks in between, after having completed Modul 5 of “The Indonesian Way” I’m already able to follow and engage in a videocall with Indonesian friends, which is great. With Indonesia now reopening its borders, I’m looking forward practising speaking the language in the country itself.
As for the course, I really like the mix between grammar exercises, vocabulary, listening, and learning background information about Indonesia. Many of the group exercises work really well if one studies together with a partner.
I can really recommend this course for anyone seeking to build up some basic Indonesian language skills.
Good Module
This is a good module.
A good Start towards adding Indonesian as a second language
Found course material to be logically progressing with exercises and word problems that are fun and educational.
This is by far the best Indonesian language course
This is by far the best Indonesian language course available on the internet.
Great Resource
This has been a great resource for me to learn Indonesian. I would highly recommend this comprehensive, user-friendly, and intuitive course to learn Indonesian from the basics up to intermediate proficiency and beyond! These lessons have been wonderful for someone who is interested in progressing in Indonesian and has enabled me to speak with confidence to Indonesians. The course is designed in such a manner as to make it easy to grasp and retain Indonesian vocabulary and grammar. If you are looking for the best tool for your money you could do no better than the Indonesian Way.
Still a great course!
I have come back to using Indonesian Online after a break of some years, and am so grateful that this resource is still out there. I found my old review of some years ago, and thought to post it again, as it expresses my admiration for this fantastic set of resources:
Platinum subscription is perfect!
If you think The Indonesian Way is great, just wait till you try the next two courses in the Indonesian Online series. Wow! Having completed the 113 lessons of The Indonesian Way, and looking for something to take me to the next level, I completed the 22 lessons of Baca Yuk!, and now am working my way through the 30 lessons of Aneka Baca. I am just amazed at how extensive the whole set-up of Indonesian Online is. And so the reason for this review, is to recommend that anyone serious about learning Indonesian should take the Platinum subscription. The resources really are endless – I see there are still two levels of readings and mixed media ahead of me. The quality, excellent as it is in ‘The Indonesian Way’, to be honest, gets even better as one gets into the more advanced offerings. And I am impressed by the way that when there is any kind of technical issue, at my end or on the web, I get almost immediate responses from the team and personalised assistance until things are sorted out. Couldn’t be happier with my subscription.

very good material
The Indonesian Way is a very good material for learning Indonesian language. I have tried other materials for beginners before but I find that this one is the most well-defined, and also the most agreeable. It has very clear explanations, useful exercises, and, most importantly, always revisits previously learned vocabulary. It involves all the four sections of learning a foreign language: listening, speaking, writing (to a lesser degree, however), and reading, with the most emphasis on listening.
I would suggest, however, slightly more exercises for each lesson, and to make sure every lesson has one or more full support-texts (written or audio), as an example for the grammar or else, just a few lines, so that we can see exactly how the vocabulary can be used. Most lessons had examples like that, but I think some not.
Also, one or two lessons contain listening exercises with contents that are extremely heavy (one was about a national park in Kalimantan) for the beginners level
On the whole, I strongly recommend The Indonesian Way for learning Indonesian! Me, as a level 0-student (with Romanian as mother-tongue, so quite different), I already feel like I can speak and write some sentences freely, and I remember easily the vocabulary.
Great learning tool
The Indonesian Way is a great learning tool. The lessons in Module 1 build upon each other well — I felt challenged but not out of my depth. I like that the Indonesian Way contains insightful cultural information in addition to grammar and vocabulary. I also like that it introduces the learner to both formal and informal Indonesian.

Probably the best online course
Good course – probably the best online.
Top line of crossword often does to work. Have tried on several different browsers, but the app still fails.
Lesson 1.15 doesn’t seem to have an option to mark the lesson as complete, so % completion will now be off (unless of course the testimonial is a required part of the lesson).
I am really enjoying this!
The lessons are clear and I am always learning something new!
Captivating and fun!
Indonesian Online is one of the best ways to make language acquisition captivating and fun. I’ve been a huge fan of Indonesian Online since I first discovered it in 2013. In 2021, I went ahead and bought the entire program. The lessons are fun and entertaining, while the tasks, crosswords, and other exercises leave you feeling accomplished as you complete them. As a linguist, I appreciate the care into detail that was put into the creation of this program.
A great online textbook
I’m approximately half way though the lessons in The Indonesian Way. The lessons have mostly been great, and I feel like I am making progress. I like the variety of audio dialogues available to listen to and practice with, and the exercises are good too. The Anki deck is very convenient and I practice with it every day. The only negative things I’ve noticed are some errors in the text, as well as not getting replies when I send an email, which is a bit annoying. But, other than that, I’m happy with my experience so far.

Helped me improving my Indonesian
This course has really helped me to improve my Indonesian. It scaffolds content well and also does a good job of teaching a range of Indonesian culture.

Prepared for the journey
This is the best program to begin studying Bahasa Indonesia. I feel confident enough in the vocabulary and grammar that I learned to take the next step in my lifelong pursuit of studying the language and culture of Indonesia.
Worth Every Dollar
The premier learning package that challenges your Indonesian learning every step of the way. I have found this extremely beneficial and more rewarding than any other application online. I have been looking for a number of years for a suitable online learning package that goes beyond Duolingo and this is the answer. My only qualm is that the functionality of the testing can be muddling at best, frustrating at its worst.
A Lucky Find
This is a great program and I feel lucky to have come across it.
Best resource to learn Indonesian
This is probably the best resource to learn Indonesian out there. There aren’t that many colleges in the US that teach Indonesian and there aren’t that many in-depth online learning platforms (beyond basic apps like duolingo) that include the language, so I was very fortunate to have found this course. I really like that the textbook includes online interactive exercises to make learning more engaging. One area of possible improvement though is that the exercises were sometimes a little glitchy (such as the hidden word exercises not letting you circle words on the edges), but that was the only complaint I had. Overall it’s an incredibly helpful course.

Module 1
I finished this Module many years ago before my first time visiting Indonesia.
This time I reviewed it to refresh and enhance my Indonesian skills.
This course has improved alot and it is easy to understand and for me it is fun to work with.
Module 1 is great for people who do vaccation in Indonesia, it provides you with all the necesarry vocabulary and phrases a tourist would need.
Surprisingly Good.
I subscribed to The Indonesian Way, Platinum membership as I now live in Indonesia between working. I have found the course extremely enjoyable and interesting to work through. I have now completed Module 1 and although it is only 15 lessons, my vocabulary and grammar has improved significantly to where I can now comfortably communicate with my Indonesian partner and her friends in their language. I find the lessons are very good for explaining things that help me understand sentence and word structure. The crosswords, hidden words etc exercises are great fun and I not only look forward to them, but find them very helpful in re-enforcing the word and its meaning.
My only difficulty to date has been in understanding what has been said in some of the audio exercises. Although it makes the learning process a little slower, it is based upon real life conversations that reflect what actually goes on with the Indonesian conversations.
I recommend this course to anyone who wants to learn Indonesian and enjoy the process.
Great course
This is a good course, and I’m satisfied with the money I spent on it. This course is the full package: grammar, listening, vocabulary, etc. I love the listening exercises, the dictation exercises, the focus on culture and pronunciation. This seems like a pretty effortless way for a busy person to gain a foundation in Indonesian — exactly what I wanted. It has taken me about three months to complete the first two modules, and I look forward to continuing through the rest of the course.
The only thing that keeps this course from being absolutely perfect is the technical difficulties and imperfections with the online product, such as the top row of the crossword typically not working for me (on a MacBook) regardless of which web browser I use, having to log in multiple times sometimes to make the course book recognize that I have access, how the instructions on some of the exercises sometimes do not match the content of the exercise, etc. Small things overall.
A very complete course
A very complete course
A real language course
After having tried several language courses I definitely pick The Indonesian Way as my No.1 course. Interesting, well balanced and above all much more effective than other language courses.
In addition its worth to note – whenever there seems to be a problem to access the course, somebody responds & helps in a very short time. This course is money well spent!

Great Support
You can always count on support when the website goes down. This is a huge plus, thank you!!!!!!
I would have never learned
I would have never learned Bahasa Indonesia without TIW. I am so grateful!
It is simple and fun to work on each lesson.
Each chapter is manageable and I feel like I am learning without even knowing it.
The Indonesian Way – Bahasa Indonesian Online – Best Learning Experience
Hi TIW Team,
Having tried other educational methods in this field; I continue to be enthralled in the acquisition of knowledge and learning skills experience being taught through TIW.

Great course!
Great course! I have increased my vocabulary very quickly and have been able to have relatively complex conversations with a native Indonesian speaker!
Better than the rest
I tried Babbel, but this works better for me.
Only some technical problems stop me from giving 5 stars.
The most thorough and thoughtful way to learn Indonesian short of living there
I spent several years looking for a thorough and thoughtful way to learn Indonesian from the United States. Apps like Duo Lingo or Babbel were helpful, but never felt comprehensive or specifically created with Bahasa Indonesia in mind. I’m so grateful to have found The Indonesian Way. In just a few weeks, I already feel like I have a much more sophisticated understanding of Indonesian, as well as some of the nuances found within a living language that’s always growing, changing, and adapting to new culture and speakers.
I do a lot of work in Indonesia. I cannot wait to return with a greater handle on the language, thanks to The Indonesian Way.
I really like this program
I am only 15 lessons in, but so far I really like this! The way it’s structured makes it easy to dissect and understand. So far I’m finding this easier to learn than Spanish, and I think a lot of that has to do with how it is presented and sectioned.
An easy way
I love this way of learning. Thank you!

comprehensive
I have tried many other ways of learning Indonesian but find the use of The Indonesian way very comprehensive.
I am gaining confidence in
I am gaining confidence in my ability to read, speak, and write in Bahasa Indonesia. This is the best program for language learning!!!!!
5 Stars
I continue to enjoy this course. It does get more challenging as you complete the various modules. I am learning alot. I highly recommend this program to anyone trying to learn the Indonesian language. 5 Stars
Fun to learn
Since I travel frequently to Bali and Labuan Bajo, I wanted to be able to communicate with the locals not only in English but also in their language. Before I studied with other programs, but this is by far the best offering I experienced so far. It strikes the right balance between theoretical backgrounds, vocabulary and practical use. I especially like the frequent recordings of native speakers- because for me ‘understanding’ is the more challenging part. In addition the different types of exercises make it quite entertaining to study.
Excellent Course!!!!
Excellent Course!!!!
Best bahasa Indonesia course ever
Absolutely the best bahasa Indonesia course ever! I have been doing all Uli’s courses for some time and have actually progressed to some of the slightly more advanced, but still always do The Indonesian-Way in tandem for revision. I just love it.
Really Wonderful!
The material is really wonderful. Terima kasih
Never a dull moment
The indonesian way enables you to study at your own speed, both fast and slow. There’s enough repetition of vocabulary in the courses alone to learn most words without long and tedious study. The sound files are great and I personally think the substitution drill is absolutely brilliant.
This is an excellent book
I really like how the lessons are set out, the order by which you learn the grammar rules and the use of informal and formal language from the outset.
Good self learning material
I appreciate it a lot. Excellent self learning material, not boring at all. Thank you very much for providing this opportunity.
Indonesian Way review
Having been a previous student using the Indonesian Way I have returned to use the resource as a tool for revision and perfecting. I found the program to be exceptional. However upon my return there are a few things that I would identify as having already been perfectly structured and the changes seem to be not as well placed. For me this is fine because it challenges my learning to not associate words or phrases to certain patterns and placements in the program (which is one tactic I use for memory) but for a first time learner this could cause confusion or frustration.
Otherwise I still think the Indonesian Way is a very user friendly program for learning not only words but language and cultural aspects pertaining to Indonesia.
Terima Kasih!
Why would I want to know the different types of rickshaws when I can’t count to ten yet?
The order in which vocab is presented makes absolutely no sense. At the end of the first month a student can’t count to ten, name a single color, or mention any family members other than mother and father. Speaking about family is extremely culturally important in Indonesia. Meanwhile, by this time a student can list 5 different words for types of rickshaws, knows the names of public transportation companies, and several different countries, only one of which is bound to be useful and therefor is better googled than included as an introductory unit in the book. On top of all this some of the vocab is frankly given with inaccurate definitions (mari does not mean goodbye, in fact its never even used to mean goodbye in the textbook, they just list that as the definition for some reason), other times they expect you to know words that were never included in the vocab leaving the student to infer the meaning from context, or worse (as in the case of younger sibling) expect you to provide it as an answer without the word ever being written once in the book even incidentally. Also this book is extremely buggy. I find myself constantly reloading pages and clicking randomly in desperate attempts for the latihan to actually appear on the page.
Despite these shortcomings, it is a relatively effective way to learn indonesian (and for many the only option anyway). The book does a good job teaching the grammar, and building upon itself to construct more complex questions sentences and answers.
Very well designed and implemented
I have began the course as a refresher. Found nothing new in the first two modules but think it is extremely well structured with very effective use of repetition. The integration of the multiple media involved is very successful.
very good
Your lessons are by far the best way for me to learn bahasa indonesia. I like that I have the feeling I can remember nearly everything after doing the lessons. I do not ever need to learn a lot of vocabularies after repeating the lessons.
What I also like is that the language I learn with your program is very close to the actual language people speak in real live (except for this formal / slang language issue, but you found a good way to teach both) which is by far not the case with many other programs.
I hope soon some more grammar lessons are coming up as no one has yet been able to explain to me the Indonesian prefixes and suffixes. I have great hopes I can learn it with your program.
The webpage could be improved but I guess you are working on it anyway and it is expensive as well.
I already recommended your program many times.
A whole learning experience
I am not only enjoying studying this program, but am finding my language skills are improving immensely. I love the fact that the course covers all skills – writing, reading, listening and speaking – unlike a lot of other on line courses where you only learn words or set sentences. I also like the fact that not only formal Indonesian is taught but also colloquial.
It really is a brilliant way to self study Indonesian and I so wish I had come across this course a couple of years ago when I first began to study the language.
A big congratulations and thank you to the creators!
Review
I am enjoying the online lessons and I find the gradient just right. Learning a few new words with each class and then the repetition of the words already used is good. In the workbook I have found one of the crosswords to have clues that don’t match the boxes. Some of the maps are difficult to read.
The use of a diversity range of study tools
The use of a diversity range of study tools, such as create a sentence, listen and recall, answer in Indonesian, translate to English and change a sentence as you speak it (just to name a few), as well as the basic learn the words, allowed me to develop my very basic Indonesian quite quickly. It would be useful if there were more review lessons, apart from referral to other programs and the Anki flash cards, particularly at the end of each module, just to reinforce the word meanings before jumping straight into more complex sentence structures. Overall, The Indonesian Way is a very useful tool, one that I will continue to use avidly into the future. Terima kasih!
Useful but would be better
Useful but would be better in app form
Fantastic Website
This is a great tool for learning Indonesia. The variety of exercises make it easy to learn to read, write, and understand Indonesian. The cultural notes are very interesting, as well.
Staring Indonesian
Better than Babbel, IMHO.
Learning with The Indonesian Way
‘The Indonesian Way’ provides a great foundation for learning Bahasa Indonesia. The access to audio is particularly useful and the up-to-date cultural notes are really interesting. I like the way this programme gives students a good balance between colloquial and more formal language. Makasih
Underrated learning resource! Fantastic for beginners.
I was pretty skeptical initially because of the slightly steep price and the lack of reviews available online. However, I took the leap of faith and made the purchase a couple of months ago. I am happy to say that this course is fantastic and totally worth more than what you pay for!
The course is well-structured and perfect for absolute beginners. Each lesson has mini tests to help you solidify the concepts and also just the right amount of new vocab.
It is obvious that the Indonesian Online team put in a lot of effort into making this course and I hope that more people will support them!
The best place to study Indonesian On-line.
I have found The Indonesian Way / Indonesia Online to be excellent. The lessons are easy to follow and you can listen Indonesian being spoken in a natural voice. I enjoy the crosswords too. I have been able to do the lessons with minimal help from my Indonesian wife. I also love that the course doesn’t have reoccurring fees and as far as I can find it is the most extensive on line course available. There are numerous other sites / apps but they don’t take you past a very basic level and normally have reoccurring fees. Thanks to all the effort put in to it- it has been a great help to me.
Can’t believe how much my Indonesian has improved!
This is my third year of studying Indonesian but my first with Indonesian Online. Prior to this I had been using a language program that focused primarily on vocabulary but was short on grammar, so while my vocab increased significantly, I was always unsure of sentence structure etc. On my recent visit to Indonesia I realised how much my conversational skills have improved. A local friend who struggled to understand me last year had no issue this time round. I was holding proper conversations with people, was understood and more importantly, I understood them. This had always been an issue for me, but again, the listening exercises in this program have worked magic on my listening skills. I’m excited to continue studying with this program and seeing how far I can go in the next twelve months. Absolutely stoked with this program and have been recommending it to many! Thank you Indonesia Online for creating a quality program at an affordable price. Terima kasih banyak!
Better than Babbel
I think the structure and approach to learning are better than Babbel’s, which I tried first but never really liked. Your additional information about customs and behavior is also very helpful. The only criticism I found are some minor flaws in technical functions, like not accepting a word that was written correctly, but these are rare.
Extremely helpful!
I am a 70 year old woman who spends a couple of months a year in Bali and am determined to converse comfortably with my Balinese friends. I am using several online teaching apps (all of which I enjoy and learn from) but this is by far the best. I can only use the online parts, but they are still very helpful. I can’t recommend this course enough.
The best online Indonesian lessons
I use several online courses to study bahasa Indonesia and this is by far the best. Compared to the other sites, it is the most comprehensive and the most helpful site to learn Indonesian online. I intend to keep using it for years to come, even for revision as well as for learning. I love that I can listen to the language being spoken and, even though it is often too fast for me, I can listen over and over until I can keep up. Terima kasih banyak untuk program yang luar biasa ini!
Fabulous Course
For me, this course just gets better. It pushes me harder than other courses and it also encourages me to listen to the Indonesian transcripts over and over until I can (more or less) keep up. I can usually read everything by myself, albeit slowly, but to listen and understand at the normal speaking speed is much more challenging. My husband says I am obsessed with it but I think he is just jealous because I am now way ahead of him!! 🤣🤣
First, I love the lessons
First, I love the lessons and that they include information about the country and culture. Please write more about these subjects.
I suggest you to include songs, newspaper headlines and comics. It will make learning more fun.
The Best
I am an older person and have been trying to learn bahasa Indonesia (mainly online) for a couple of years. This course is by far the best and I just love doing it, I know I have improved enormously in the last couple of months and can’t wait to go back to the village where we spend a month or two each year so I can show off my new skills to my Balinese friends. I know they will be impressed!
I am from Germany
I am from Germany, where the Indonesian language is very rarely spoken. It was impossible to find a class for learning Indonesian.
There are some other resources on the Internet, but most of them are focused only on vocabulary.
TIW provides comprehensive materials: grammar explanation, various exercises for reading, hearing and writing but also cultural information about the people in Indonesia.
I also tried “Indonesianpod101”, but it is a bit more expensive than TIW and I like the variety of the exercises in The Indonesian Way, which is why I retuned here.
Since TIW can be used with mobile devices, I can learn at home and while commuting. I am completely satisfied with The Indonesian Way.
The best Indonesian lessons!
I have now completed 86 of 113 lessons and my Bahasa Indonesia skills have improved out of sight. On Uli’s recommendation, I have also started on Baca Yuk. This is much harder and, as Uli suggested, I do two or three of The Indonesian Way and then one Baca Yuk. I must confess, after spending ages on the Baca Yuk lesson, I am so grateful to get back to The Indonesian Way, which is closer to my current level! I am am absolutely loving these courses. Terima kasih banyak, Uli!
An effective way to study Indonesian
Indonesian Online has been a very effective way for me to study Indonesian. The way it is designed with various short activities helps keep interest in learning the same dialogue through different means.
The Indonesian Way
I really love this course. In fact, my husband says I am obsessed as I do at least two lessons every day! I have just completed 99 but now I also go back and revise one of the earlier lessons every day as well. It’s amazing how much I remember! I have also purchased Baca Yuk, which is quite a lot harder, but I have done a few. I will do more once I have completed The Indonesia Way (which won’t be long 🤣👍).
Terima kasih banyak, Uli 🙏🙏🙏
Fabulous
I have been super impressed with the Indonesian Way. It is logical in its delivery with clear explanations of new concepts and plenty of opportunities to practice. I’m looking forward to starting on Unit 2.
Very effective program
I tried learning Indonesian just from a vocabulary flashcard app, Sneddon’s grammar, and a book written in Indonesian. I wasn’t getting very far. Other language learning apps were really not effective, either. This program, on the other hand, has been very effective!! I love that I am hearing a variety of native speakers so I get good listening/comprehension practice and hear the correct pronunciations and inflections modeled. Adding the new vocabulary into my flashcard app, which I review daily, helps me learn the vocabulary really well so when I try to do the conversation exercises I can readily think of the words I am trying to say. Understanding how Indonesian culture is different from English speaking cultures is also so helpful. I am really impressed and am excited to continue learning!
Baca Yuk! – A Tremendous Resource
Indonesian language resources designed for the intermediate learner are rare. That’s why I was so glad to find the “Baca Yuk!” program. The lessons are well-structured with authentic materials (especially valuable for me are the audio recordings with matching text). I am working through the lessons now with the assistance of an Indonesian tutor (Italki.com). With two-thirds of the program completed, I can say that my learning expectations have been exceeded. In fact, a turning point in my years of Indonesian study came in Lesson 10 with the presentation of “Colloquial Indonesian.” Thank you, Indonesian Online, for the work you have done to make available these learning materials.
Terima Kasih
Thank you so much Uli and Indonesian-online. I have just finished lesson 113 and have repeated up to lesson 65. I am doing much better at the repeated lessons!👍 I have also purchased Baca Yuk, which is much more challenging and have just discovered Ayo Membaca, which I am thoroughly enjoying. I will be purchasing more courses as my Bahasa Indonesia improves. I absolutely know that your programmes will get me to the point that I can comfortably chat with my Balinese friends. They have already commented on my improvement and I am pretty confident they will notice more improvement when I go back in a couple of weeks. And Uli, thank you for your patience with my lack of computer skills. You have been so kind! I would recommend all your programmes to anyone wanting to learn Bahasa Indonesia 🙏
Verbs
I just finished module 2 and I think it would have been good if the additions like mem- and ber- in verbs would have been explained. I kind of missed that in this module.
Great Way to Learn!
Thanks so much for this site! A great way to learn Indonesian. I’ve found it really easy and the pace is fantastic!
Terrific
I find ‘indonesian-online’ to be an excellent course so far. It is well paced with lots of variety. I am learning and retaining. The course work is challenging, but not overwhelming.
Now I am waiting for ‘balinese-online’ please please please!
It’s ok
Plenty of content, but it is quite difficult to keep track of what lesson has been completed and get an understanding of how you are going. Additionally, and perhaps this is because I purchased this some time ago, it appears a lot of the relevant content for me is not included in my membership.
Amazing so far! Easy and
Amazing so far! Easy and applicable in every day situations. Only thing I would like to see is a way to to find useful products without having to remember the lesson number, like sentence shells.
Great structure and practical information
I bought the trial version to see how it is, and I have been thoroughly enjoying the structured lessons in this course. The language taught is very applicable, and taught in a way that shows how it can be used in a real situation. I already feel comfortable with the basics of Indonesian even after completing only a few lessons. I highly recommend this course for anyone looking to learn some practical Indonesian at a beginner level.
Learned so much!
This program has taught me so much in only one week. I started this program nothing in Indonesian to learning 250 words plus basic sentences seven days later! I highly recommend using this program if you are unable to study in a classroom.
I am continuing to progress
I am continuing to progress and am very comfortable speaking when I am in Indonesia. Every time I visit (3-4 times a year) my communications skills get better and better. Thank you!!
This is a great resource.
This is a great resource.
Pivotal course in learning Indonesian
I find this course absolutely pivotal in learning Indonesian. The quality of the course has been excellent so far. I would recommend this to everyone who has an interest to learn the Indonesian language.
Definitely worth it!
This is the best structured online course for any language that I’ve encountered. I’ve studied languages at university and online, and honestly thing that this course is great value for money. You get interactive lessons alongside course materials, with clear explanation of grammar and pronunciation along the way. You’ll get way further with this than duolingo, and you’ll come out with a better foundation to build into advanced levels if you wish. Terima kasih!
Wonderful course
This is a gem of a course. It has both the interactiveness of an app and the academic rigour of a textbook. To have a structured way to go from absolute beginner to advanced, while paying sufficient attention to grammar, slang and culture, is very valuable.
The Best Online Course!
I am now revising The Indonesian Way for the third time. I have also bought and enjoy Anak Jalanan and Baca Yuk. They are all wonderful and I have never found any other courses anywhere near as good. I thoroughly recommend them to anyone trying to study Indonesian on line and not in an actual class. And there are ever any problems, there is always someone available to help out. My study time is honestly one of my favourite times of the day!
The Best!
I just sent a testimonial but think I gave some incorrect information. The other two courses I actually purchased were Aku Anak Siapa and Serba Serbi Nusantara but they seem to have given me access to other topics like Anak-Anak Jalanan.
Anyway, as I said before, they are all excellent and I thoroughly recommend you buy them. They also give you access to the Anki Flashcards, which are great for word revision.
Great Way to Learn Indonesian
I have tried a number of different online Indonesian programs and this is the best one I have used by far. This program is great for busy people who can schedule their own time to learn the Indonesian language. I highly recommend the Indonesian Way as a great tool to learn this interesting language.
The best way to learn
The best way to learn Bahasa Indonesia online!!

5 stars, of course!

Best on-line language program that I have taken
This is the best online language program that I have taken. It is quite rigorous and I have learned alot in a short period of time. I would highly recommend this program for those looking to learn Indonesian at their own pace. It is also quite affordable for what you get.
Easily the best resource for learning Indonesian!
There is nothing else online that comes anywhere close to this resource. Comprehensive, well structured, interactive. Excellent in every way. I have been using this tool for the past two years and have moved from absolute novice to university course. It has allowed me to work at my own pace and at the same time stay motivated.
