«Indonesian Online» is continuously evolving. In 2019, the intermediate course «Baca Yuk!» and the advanced reader «Serba Serbi Nusantara» each contained 23 lessons. Today, both courses have expanded to 33 lessons, meaning we have added 20 new lessons over the past few years.
Creating a lesson is a time-intensive process. One of the biggest challenges is sourcing suitable raw materials. We aim for our texts to be as authentic as possible, typically selecting articles from newspapers or online journals, along with short videos that feature clear audio and minimal background music. Finding a well-matched text and video for intermediate or advanced learners can take several days. Since authenticity is a priority, we look for texts that are of appropriate length and written in good Indonesian.
Once we have selected and edited a text, we incorporate a voice recording. Only then do we begin developing exercises, cultural notes, and other supporting materials. On average, creating a single intermediate or advanced lesson takes around 40 hours.
Recent Developments
The most recently developed lessons include “Kulit Putih Perempuan Indonesia” in «Serba Serbi Nusantara». Additionally, “Cerita Pendek: Emak Ingin Naik Haji” has undergone a complete revision and is now available in three parts: (1), (2), and (3). In the course «Baca Yuk!», the latest addition is “Padi”.
«Baca Yuk!» is an ideal follow-up to «The Indonesian Way». «Serba Serbi Nusantara» is best suited for students with a proficiency level of at least B1, preferably B2, on the CEFR scale. These courses can also be purchased as part of the «Upper Level Courses» package, which includes «Anak Jalanan», «Aneka Baca», and «Ada Apa dengan Cinta?». Together, these five courses offer approximately 350 hours of learning material.
