Dr. George Quinn
Dr George Quinn was born in Te Kuiti, New Zealand in 1943. He first visited Indonesia in 1966 during the turmoil surrounding the fall of President Soekarno and the rise to power of General Soeharto. Between 1967 and 1970 he taught English at Satya Wacana University in Salatiga. In 1971 he enrolled as an undergraduate student at Gadjah Mada University in Jogjakarta, completing a Bachelor of Arts (Sarjana Muda) degree in Indonesian language and literature at the end of 1973.
Dr. George Quinn is the retired head of the Southeast Asia Centre at the Australian National University (2000 to 2008). Here he taught Indonesian and Javanese, and contributed to courses on Indonesian linguistics, literature and culture, Indonesian religion and politics, and East Timor. He continues to teach Javanese at ANU. His main publications are The Novel in Javanese (1992), The Rape of Sukreni (1998, 2nd edition 2012, an English translation of Sukreni Gadis Bali by A.A. Pandji Tisna). Dr. Quinn also compiled The Learners Dictionary of Today’s Indonesian (2001). Currently, he is completing a book on sacred sites and local pilgrimage in Java, and a tuition manual for the study of Javanese. George Quinn holds a Bachelor of Arts degree (Sarjana Muda) from Gadjah Mada University, Jogjakarta (1974). In 1984 he graduated with a PhD from the University of Sydney.
Dr Quinn was the first Australian or New Zealander to gain a degree from an Indonesian university. The degree included a component of studies in modern Javanese and old Javanese. Javanese language, literature and society became his abiding interest. In 1984 he completed a PhD in Javanese literature at the University of Sydney.
Between 1974 and 1990 Dr Quinn taught Indonesian at the University of Sydney, moving to Charles Darwin University in 1991, then to the Australian National University in 1995. Between 2001 and his retirement in 2008 Dr. Quinn was Head of the Southeast Asia Centre in the Faculty of Asian Studies at the Australian National University. He has a native-speaker level command of Indonesian and Javanese. He is the author of The Novel in Javanese (KITLV Press, 1991) and The Learner’s Dictionary of Today’s Indonesian (Allen & Unwin, 2001), plus many scholarly papers and an English translation of the Indonesian-language novel The Rape of Sukreni (Lontar, 2003).
