AKU ANAK SIAPA? POTRET KEHIDUPAN ANAK JALANAN YOGYAKARTA (1)

When you state your opinion, you express what you believe or how you feel. Indonesians have a number of ways to convey what they think, believe, or feel. The most common are Saya kira… (I think that…) and Saya rasa<… (I feel / think that…).
In the past you probably have used Saya pikir… a lot. Please note that Saya pikir… is much less frequently used than Saya kira… and Saya rasa…. For the time being, please do not use Saya pikir….
Another way to state your opinion (if you are convinced about something) is by saying: Saya yakin… (I am sure that…). Please note that you can NOT use Saya pasti…!
Menurut saya…; or Menurut pendapat saya… (in my opinion…) are more formal ways to state your opinion. The most formal is Menurut hemat saya….
You might also wish to use one of the following terms: Setahu saya… (as far as I know…), Saya percaya… (I believe…), Tampaknya… (it seems that…) and Kelihatannya… (it seems that…) or Kalau saya tidak salah… (if I am not mistaken…).
Also note that if you want to state a negative opinion, e.g. “I don’t think this is true”, you cannot add tidak before the verbs kira, rasa, or pikir. Instead, you say Saya kira ini tidak benar. The only word that you can negate with tidak is percaya: Saya tidak percaya… (I don’t believe…).
Some of the above phrases, i.e. saya kira, saya rasa, saya pikir, saya yakin, saya percaya, tampaknya, kelihatannya can be followed by a bahwa clause that is equivalent to the English ‘that’ clause:
Please note that the use of bahwa is entirely optional. Cf. Sneddon’s Grammar 3.108-3.111.
