Kosa Kata
According to the KBBI (Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia), the word “merantau” is derived from the word “rantau” which means “a coast line of a river, lake, or sea”. Hence, “merantau” means “to sail from coast to the other coasts. In modern context, “merantau” means to go to the other countries “negeri seberang”, islands, or continents in order to seek for wealth or knowledge”. The place or destination where a person goes to is called “perantauan”. The term “anak rantau” is usually popular to call a young scholar or a young person who is looking for fortune or knowledge.
Si and Sang
Both si and sang are commonly used in folk tales with names of the animals or characters. However, sang is commonly used as honorific to show that the person referred to is someone held in high respect. Look at the following examples of both words.
si kancil dan si buaya jahat
the mousedeer and the bad crocodile
si peri kecil
the little fairy
sang Baginda Raja
the King
sang Presiden
the President

Tata Bahasa
The Particle -pun
The particle -pun is used to emphasise something that has been mentioned before. Look at the following example.
Malin Kundang menyelinap ke dalam sebuah kapal. …Kapal pun berlayar.
Malin snuck into a ship. …the ship sailed.
The particle -pun can also act like a sentence connector juga (also) when it is placed after the subject. Look at the following example.
Ia menjadi kaya dan mempunyai kapal besar dengan 100 awak kapal. Ia pun mempunyai seorang istri yang cantik.
He became rich and had a big ship with 100 crews. He also had a beautiful wife.
The particle -pun is written separately from the previous word except in the conjunctions walaupun, meskipun (although), ataupun (or also), and maupun (as well as).
